FIBA World Championship
The FIBA World Championship (also called the Basketball World Championship) is a world basketball tournament for men's national teams held quadrennially by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). A parallel event for women's teams, the FIBA World Championship for Women, is also held quadrennially, in the same year as the men's event but in a different country. The champion team wins the Naismith Trophy, which was first awarded in the 1967 tournament. The tournament structure is similar but not identical to that of the FIFA World Cup; both of these international competitions have been played in the same year since 1970. TournamentsFrom 1950 until 1974, each of the eight final teams would play all seven of the other teams once each and the team with the best record would win the gold madal, the second the silver and the third the bronze. Ties were broken on the basis of the results of games between (among) tied teams. Starting at the 1978 tournament, the top teams played in a single-elimination tournament to determine the gold medallists. Classification games are held for eliminated teams. |

The events all began in 1999, although the Bridgestone Invitational is the direct successor of the World Series of Golf, which began in 1976.
